My MR2 isn’t Elise-tiny. It’s not lowered either. Why are modern cars so damn big?
Points awarded for creative answers, deducted for the obvious “modern parents are dumb”.
I guess high cars are the new low cars.

Old cars live in a parallel dimension where size and mass are slightly shifted. All cars are really similar sizes.
You said you wanted creative. Your MR2 is a boat compared to my 90 Mini. All things are relative.

because a modern car won’t do this and turn you into splattered cherry pie in even a bad on-road collision.

Because people have become shitty drivers and manufacturers want to coddle them so that they may continue to buy cars, rather than cull them, so that society may progress.

It’s all a conspiracy by Mazda. Hear me out.
Mazda made the general populace, and in turn the manufacturers, believe that Bigger Is Better. After years of thsi, what does Mazda do? They unveil the small, lightweight ND Miata, which because of thier previous dastardly work now has zero real competition.
Miata domination. Soon they’ll fill the roads, claim ownership over the earth and destroy any that dare challenge their fun filled regime.
The Mazdapocolypse is coming. All of you shall bow before your happy masters

Maybe your eyeballs are the convex rather than concave so that everything seems bigger rather than smaller. (I’m using the fisheye lens on my dashcam as inspiration as it makes things look farther away and therefore a lot smaller than they are :P)

Oh come on. people have always been shitty drivers. it’s why the 1960s and 1970s have amongst the highest rate of on-road fatalities despite there having been fewer cars on the road, and fewer miles traveled.
for the entirety of this country’s existence we’ve handed out driver’s licenses to anyone with pubes and a pulse. the fatality rate was much higher in decades past because cars weren’t designed with any consideration for the meatbags inside them, and in any significant collision would fold up impotently and crush their occupants. Since we don’t have the stones to make it harder to get a driver’s license (because “freedom” or “rights” or something) the industry has trended towards making cars designed to protect the occupants at all costs.
I’m OK with that.

Precious cargo, fear of mortality, lowered anxiety during driving (from the perspective of the buyer), stuff like that.

How did they do that? By building excellent 2s, 3s and 6s? Did the SUVs really do that much work? Is the CX9 even still around? Is it really bigger than a KLUER!?!?
I for one welcome our new Mazda overlords.

BUT THEY’RE HUGE!
I think it’s more dick-wagging-ride-height-i’m-better-than-you-because-i-look-down-on-you sort of stuff than legit safety. Any Volvo sedan will tell that story - they’re not monsters.

Thank you!
I guess they became shitty because they stopped caring. Sad as it may be, it’s a problem that self-driving cars look like they’ll eventually solve.

Arms race.
Moms, and men with dick size issues, only feel safe if their car (or their kid’s car) is bigger than everyone else’s so they’ll “win” an accident. So manufacturers always have to make the new generation bigger than the competition.

You could argue that cars were substantially less safe back then. Shit tires, shit brakes, shit interiors, no safety equipment at all. Yet people were travelling the same speeds.
They may have been better drivers in worse cars.

But they don’t need to be tall for that! A fairer comparison would be a 488, which is both lower than my car and substantially safer.
These cars are huge and it’s more about ego than safety.
Ps. This would’ve been killer on a post I made a few months ago regarding finding pictures of your own car wrecked. That thing’s cooked.

15-17 million cars and trucks are sold every year. 0% of the people who buy them care what you think.

70s, but not 60s. But what I’m happier with does matter, since we’re all free to express our opinions through spending choices in a free market, same way you’re free to be ‘OK’ with the current approach.
Thanks for keeping an open mind.
